Since bone metabolism is very active in littles, it has been supposed that radiostrontium supplied from mother`s milk will contaminate littles. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether chitosan could block the transfer of radiostrontium from mother`s milk to littles. ICR strain female mice (8~ 10 weeks of age, body weight 25~35 g) and littles (one week of age, body weight 1 ~5 g) were used in this experiment. Radiostrontium (85SrCl2) was diluted to 0.005 y Ci/B.W(g), and the solution was administered to mother orally using a orogastric tube. The radioactivities in littles were measured with a gamma counter. The radiostrontium transfer from mother to little by maternal increased with the time. Chitosan significantly reduced the milk transfer of radiostrontium to littles (p <0.05). Therefore, we concluded that chitosan could block transfer of radiostrontium through mother`s milk to littles in mice.
